Seventh Mountain Resort – Bend, OR

When you’re choosing a family vacation spot you look at brochures, you checkout information on-line, or you ask family and friends for recommendations.  All are wonderful ways to help you find that perfect spot for a vacation.  However, no matter how much you research you can’t prepare for what isn’t on the brochure, the resorts Customer Service and/or hospitality.  Unfortunately, you have to find that out for yourself.

The Seventh Mountain Resort in Bend, OR is a stunning place.  Central Oregon is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the World.  (My humble opinion.)  There are mountains for skiing, sledding.  There are trails for hiking and biking and rivers for rafting.  The Seventh Mountain Resort offers many fun family activities right on its property – swimming, putt-putt golf, horseshoes, bike riding and horseback riding.  The amenities are wonderful.  However, if I receive a poor response and no assistance when it’s needed, I don’t care how great the pools are, I’m not happy and neither is my family.

I’m referencing our first morning at the resort.  After a wonderful evening, we went to bed a little late.  (Yeah!  It’s vacation!)  At 6:20 am we were jolted awake by a loud beeping noise coming from the ceiling.  As we gathered our wits we realized it was the smoke detectors battery change signal.  We called the front desk and they said that maintenance wouldn’t be in until 7:30 am.  They’ll notify them and send them over.  It’s currently 6:23 am and maintenance isn’t available for over an hour? What if this happened in the middle of the night?

We weren’t given any guidance to help our situation.  We were left with a beeping noise that went off every half hour and would last for about 2 minutes at a time.  It was a horrible way to wake up and lead to a very groggy day.

Around 11:00 am I went to the front desk to speak face to face with a Manager.  I told the front desk clerk, ‘We had an unfortunate incident in our room this morning and I would like to speak with the Manager’.  The clerk went around a corner and said, “I know you’re not “here” but…”  I heard a voice reply, “I’m Not Here. I’m Not Here.”  The clerk returns to me and gently says, “Um… the Manager isn’t available.  Maybe I can help.”

I replayed the morning event and received a little smile and a little apology.  Being blown off by the Manager and trying to be appeased with the desk clerk is not my idea of how to handle an upset customer.

(And here’s the other thing!  When maintenance DID show up at 8:00am they didn’t even have a battery to replace the detector with!  We stayed in our room for another hour and he hadn’t returned by the time we left.)

In the grand scheme of things being woken early isn’t the worst that can happen to you while on vacation.  What is unfortunate is that some forget that if a choice is made to visit their resort a choice can be made to not return, and to share the reason(s) why.

My Flavor Over Fizz Challenge with Crystal Light

I know I need to break away from my soda habit.  I read the articles about the effects of the ingredients in those drinks but I have this pattern you see.  My taste buds think I want a certain something, my grocery cart goes down a certain aisle, my arm reaches a certain shelf and on and on it goes.  Well now I’ve found that my cart can still go down the same aisle but all I need to do is adjust my view and pick-up something that blows the diet soda away, Crystal Light.

There are over 30 tasty Crystal Light flavors available in easy to carry “On The Go” packages that can turn your plain bottle of water into a fantastic and refreshing drink.  Some that I’ve enjoyed, so far, are Natural Lemon Iced Tea and Wild Strawberry – Energy (and bit of caffeine in the blend helps me with my mid-day pick-me-up.)

The fact that I’ve replaced my soda habit means my girls have as well.  Parenting bonus!  Here’s how my girls have dressed up their Crystal Light for the summer

Chillin’ with their Crystal Light

Crystal Light Strawberry Banana Popsicles!

I feel so much better since I made the switch from soda to Crystal Light.  I enjoy the taste, and my girls enjoy the taste.  This is going to be a very tasty summer.  Why not visit Crystal Light on their Facebook page and take the Flavor Over Fizz Challenge for yourself?  Cheers!

This heart-warming story of two childhood friends and growing up will capture both your interest and imagination. This beautifully done book is colorfully illustrated by former Walt Disney Studios animation artist, John Ewing who is known for working on many Disney films including Winnie the Pooh and Jungle Book.

The story shows how if one puts their mind to working hard and treating people fairly and honestly, you can become anything you want to become in life—friendships and relationships are a very important factor.”

My Best Friend, Abe Lincoln, looks at the early life of Abraham Lincoln (11-14 years old, 1820-1823) through the eyes of a fictional best friend, as he grows up in southwestern Indiana and changes from a young country boy with pants always too short to the sixteenth President of the United States!

Delightful children’s story highlights Abe Lincoln’s love of learning and respect for all people.

History buff Robert Bloch has given children whole new perspective on the early life of one of America’s best known Presidents.

Monte Carlo Review – Local Movie Passes Giveaway!

If you are going the “Stay-cation” route this summer, then do yourself a favor and be virtually transported to Monte Carlo and Paris in the latest picture “Monte Carlo” starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Katie Cassidy.

Selena Gomez stars as Grace, freshly graduated from high school with the goal of traveling to Paris with her best friend, played by Katie Cassidy.  Unknown to Grace, her soon-to-be married mom has arranged with her soon-to-be Step-Father for her soon-to-be Step-Sister (played by Leighton Meester) to join them on the trip to Paris.  Let’s just say, they aren’t each other’s biggest fans.  Family tension.  Mistaken identity.  Let the adventure begin!

As the parent of 13 year old and 10 year old girls I felt this movie was right for both ages.  Rated PG there is no bad language and the only smooches were minimal at the end.  (Am I giving something away? I don’t think so ;-> ).  I enjoyed seeing the gorgeous cities of Paris and Monte Carlo, and dreaming about seeing these sites for myself one day.

Monte Carlo is a wonderful summer movie that should make your girl/girls very happy.  For those of us that have seen “mistaken identity” formulas many times before, I felt this situation was handled well and not completely predictable.  Lots of fun and the soundtrack is great!

Monte Carlo is rated PG and opens nationwide July 1st, 2011.
