For the last 28 years, number one best-selling author, counselor and life coach David Essel has been helping people to heal from depression, anxiety, PTSD and so much more.  Read on to learn his six key steps to battle depression.
Below are David’s six top steps to take if you are battling with depression today.

Number one. Get medical help from your doctor if you feel that life is not worth living, if you’re planning or have any types of plans regarding suicide. Don’t mess around. There are medications, they can work short term, in order to pull you at least temporarily out of your depression.

When I was suicidal in 1990, I really believe it was the antidepressant drugs that I was on for a number of months that helped stop the suicidal thoughts. They did nothing to heal me, but they stopped the suicidal thoughts. A huge blessing!

Number 2. Get help with any substance addiction, or addiction in general. It doesn’t matter if it’s food, alcohol, nicotine, drugs, sex, gambling… The list goes on and on. Addictions and dependencies wear out the normal function of the brain, and can actually deplete serotonin, dopamine and GABA release. These are incredibly huge Neurotransmitters helping us to feel more normal and safe.

Number 3. Work with a counselor, therapist, life coach, minister etc. to find out if you’re just repeating the habits, thoughts, and patterns that you grew up with as a child.

So many clients I work with, who grew up with parents that never knew how to treat their own depression, simply took on the characteristics of the “woe is me… Victimhood… Substance abuse… Anger… Rage…“ of their parents that they had never healed.

Number four. Exercise. Yes, exercise. We know that movement of any type, even just walking for 30 to 60 minutes a day can help increase the feel-good endorphins in the brain, alleviating at least a percentage of the depressed feelings.

Number five. If you’re in a crappy relationship, get help. If you’re constantly put down, not listened to, these can lead over time to a wearing down of the brain endorphins as well, leading to depression.

The Same thing occurs if you’re in a job you hate. If you have a boss that is demeaning, you’ve got to get help now, start looking for another job, or if we continue to go back to the same relationship, or the same job that sucks, that is draining you of life, makes it almost impossible to heal depression within.

Number 6. If you’re not currently taking any medications for depression, look at an incredible supplement called Velvet Bean Extract, and also look for one that has on the label “15% dopa.“

While the supplement without the above changes is not strong enough to lift you out of any serious depression, mild depression’s can be alleviated a great level with this supplement.
Studies show that this supplement is effective – believe it or not – with Parkinson’s disease, low sex drive, and now we are finding in our practice that it is having a huge impact by helping to lift the moods of many of my clients who were suffering from low-grade depression.

Always talk to your doctor first if you’re having suicidal thoughts, if you need help with your addiction you’ve got to reach out to an Addiction Specialist, and, most importantly you’ve got to figure out a way, beginning today, to follow all six steps above in order to alleviate, and even eliminate your depression.
