When you need to find a new home in a new city; trying to figure out where to start can be a daunting task. The good news is this handy list breaks the process down into easy, doable steps.

Start researching as early as possible.

Even if you’re only thinking about moving, the sooner you start researching, the better. A good place to start is familiarizing you with the housing market. For instance, if you’re moving to Seattle you can do an internet search for downtown Seattle condos for sale to get a sense of what homes in various neighborhoods are selling for.

Choose a location.

Once you get an idea of what homes in particular areas cost, you can begin narrowing down your choices. You can start with budget but also consider proximity to work and/or school as well as to any other amenities that may be important to you such as shopping, entertainment, or even medical facilities. As your list of potential neighborhoods gets narrowed down, do a little deeper digging and search for online neighborhood guides that can give you the inside scoop on a particular community.

Get social.

There are two major ways tapping into your social network can help you find a new home. First, friends — or even friends of friends — who live in the area can give you an insider’s perspective on what specific neighborhoods are really like. Second, your social network is a great place to start getting recommendations for real estate agents in your new city.

Contact real estate agents.

No one will know the local real estate market like a local agent. Speak with several realtors and choose the one who best understands both your needs and the market you want to live in.

These steps will help ensure you find a home in an area you’ll love.
