Want To Be In A Good Mood? Eat These Foods

Want to be in a good mood? Eat These Foods - Ann Again and again Reviews

A number of lifestyle factors can contribute to depression, but one that’s often overlooked is what you put in your mouth. “Diet plays a huge role in depression,” says with Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine.

Do you crave sweet, salty, and fatty foods when you’re feeling blue? You’re not alone. But, says Dr. Calapai “If we eat better foods like lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and fish, we short-circuit the junk food cravings and have higher energy levels and sharper mental focus.

Vitamin D (sun exposure; fortified breakfast cereals, breads, juices, milk):

Vitamin D is required for brain development and function. Deficiency of this “sunshine vitamin” is sometimes associated with depression and other mood disorders.

“Smart” Carbs Can Have a Calming Effect

Carbohydrates are linked to the mood-boosting brain chemical, serotonin. Experts aren’t sure, but carb cravings sometimes may be related to low serotonin activity.  Choose your carbs wisely. Limit sugary foods and opt for smart or “complex” carbs (such as whole grains) rather than simple carbs (such as cakes and cookies). Fruits, vegetables, and legumes also have healthy carbs and fiber.

Want to be in a good mood? Eat these foods - Ann Again and again Reviews

Tryptophan (protein sources including turkey, beef, eggs, some dairy products, dark, leafy greens):

An amino acid, tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin. It’s not well understood, but low tryptophan seems to trigger depressive symptoms in some people who have taken antidepressants.

Increase your intake of B vitamins

People with either low blood levels of the B-vitamin folic acid, or high blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine (a sign that you are not getting enough B6, B12 or folic acid), are both more likely to be depressed and less likely to get a positive result from anti-depressant drugs. In a study comparing the effects of giving an SSRI with either a placebo or with folic acid, 61% of patients improved on the placebo combination but 93% improved with the addition of folic acid.

Boost your serotonin with amino acids

Serotonin is made in the body and brain from an amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan is then converted into another amino acid called 5-Hydroxy Tryptophan (5-HTP), which in turn is converted into the neurotransmitter serotonin. Tryptophan can be found in the diet; it’s in many protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, beans and eggs. 5-HTP is found in high levels in the African Griffonia bean, but this bean is not a common feature of most people’s diet. Just not getting enough tryptophan is likely to make you depressed; people fed food deficient in tryptophan became rapidly depressed within hours.

Up your intake of chromium

This mineral is vital for keeping your blood sugar level stable because insulin, which clears glucose from the blood, can’t work properly without it. In fact, it turns out that just supplying proper levels of chromium to people with atypical depression can make a big difference.

Select Selenium-Rich Foods

Studies have reported a link between low selenium and poor moods. The recommended amount of selenium is 55 micrograms a day for adults.  The evidence isn’t clear that taking supplements can help. And it’s possible to get too much selenium. So it’s probably best to focus on foods:

  • Beans and legumes
  • Lean meat (lean pork and beef, skinless chicken and turkey)
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Nuts and seeds (particularly brazil nuts – but no more than one or two a day because of their high selenium content)
  • Seafood (oysters, clams, sardines, crab, saltwater fish, and freshwater fish)
  • Whole grains (whole-grain pasta, brown rice, oatmeal, etc.)

Caffeine and Sugary Foods

Caffeine may be difficult for many people to completely eliminate from their diet. However, it is good to only have caffeinated drinks in moderation, particularly when you are experiencing depression-like symptoms. Caffeine can disrupt sleep patterns and make you feel anxious, both of which won’t help your depression. People who drink more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, the equivalent of four cups of brewed coffee, should consider cutting back.

5 Top Food Brain Boosters to Add To Your Shopping List

5 Top Food Brain Boosters - Ann Again and again Reviews

The foods you have in your pantry and fridge may be helping or hindering your brain. Dr. Christopher Calapai DO, a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine explains that the foods we choose have a lot to do with how sharp, attentive, alert, focused and happy we feel after they are consumed. Certain foods may taste great have additives in them that literally cloud our brains and leave us sluggish and dull headed. The opposite is also true. We can eat certain foods and feel a charge of mental energy and focus. We spoke to Dr. Calapai and got a quick list of foods that boost the brain. Check out 5 Top Food Brain Boosters to Add To Your Shopping List!

Brain Boosting Foods!

1 Nuts/Seeds:

Nuts and seeds are great sources of vitamin E.  Higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline as you get older. Add an ounce a day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds or flax seed. Also un-hydrogenated nut butter such as peanut butter, almond butter, or tahini. Raw or roasted doesn’t matter, although if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, buy unsalted nuts. “Adding nuts to your diet can aid in decreasing levels of enzymes that lead to protein plaques from forming and dementia. Nuts can also reduce brain inflammation, keep blood pressure low, a key for preventing stroke,” explains Dr. Calapai.

  1. Blueberries:

“I eat these daily and encourage patients to add blueberries to as many things as possible. They’re great on their own, added to a shake, to oatmeal, or even to a salad,” says Dr. Calapai. Blueberries are tasty and sweet and loaded with antioxidants. They’re packed with vitamin C, K and fiber and pack high levels of gallic acid, making them especially good at protecting our brains from degeneration and stress. “Studies show that eating blueberries can boost focus and memory for up to 5 hours,” adds Dr. Calapai

  1. Broccoli:

Broccoli is one of the best brain foods out there. Thanks to its high levels of vitamin K and choline which is a B vitamin know for aiding brain development keeps memory sharp and protects the brain from later decline with age. It’s also loaded with vitamin C. Just one cup provides you with 150 percent of your recommended daily intake. Its high-fiber levels make you feel full quickly, too. “People hear broccoli and roll their eyes thinking it’s bland a boring. Think of broccoli as a canvas ready to be painted with spices and flavors, offers Dr. Calapai. Try stir frying with a bit of olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Add a spoonful of orange or lemon juice and it gets this nice sweetness to it.

  1. Fish:

Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and other fish are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA seems to be very important for the normal functioning of neurons in the brain. Eating more fish often means eating less red meat and other forms of protein that are high in artery-clogging saturated fats. “People who are lacking in Omega 3’s can experience mood swings and feel edgy or negative. Omega 3’s have been known to be mood boosters in addition to enhancing focus and memory,” says Dr. Calapai.

  1. Avocado:

This creamy treat is also a rich source of the antioxidant vitamin E. Research suggests that foods rich in vitamin E—including avocado, which is also high in the antioxidant powerhouse vitamin C—are associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

10 Foods To Fight Aging

10 Foods To Fight Aging - Ann Again and again Reviews

Of course I use lotions and potions to help my skin look as good as possible, yet there’s more to reflecting beauty then what’s on the surface. I agree with Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O., board certified in family and anti-aging medicine, that beauty really does come from within. There’s no denying the beauty of a those with kindness, love and understanding in their heart. And, we know, that eating well makes you feel better and keeps your physique in top shape as well.  But don’t underestimate the power of certain foods when it comes to beauty and looking youthful.  Read on for 10 Foods To Fight Aging .

Keep them guessing your age

1.   Edamame: Collagen, the fibrous protein that keeps skin firm and wrinkle-free, begins to decline in your 20’s.  Eating edamame, a food rich in soy, can help preserve collagen.  Soy contains isoflavones – a natural compound that is capable of exerting estrogen-like effects.

2.   Tart Cherry Juice: Who knew that this tangy drink naturally contains melatonin? Well, it does.  And melatonin promotes sleep.  Beauty sleep – enough said.

3.   Oysters: These shellfish are filled with selenium and zinc, which both possess skin-clearing properties.  Zinc is a trace mineral that is essential for its role in cell growth and cell replication.  Selenium is a dietary mineral that increases your antioxidants levels.  Antioxidants are critical for preventing blocked pores.

4.   Honey: This sweet treat is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts water.  When it comes to your skin, consuming honey helps draw water from the mineral tissues to the surface of the skin, keeping it moisturized, supple and flake-free.

5.   Sweet Potato:  Aside from being delicious, sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A.  Vitamin A prevents hair from becoming dull and lifeless and your scalp dry and flakey – which can result in dandruff.

6. Cantaloupe: Very high in antioxidants, you’ll keep your eye health on point and since it is rich in vitamin C immune health is increased. That means fewer colds leaving you weak and sluggish. Finally this power fruit protects you from free radicals at the cellular level.

7. Brazil Nuts: All you need to eat are 4 of these a day to need the daily requirement. Packed with selenium, Brazil nuts protect skin against age spots and sun damage. Be sure to keep them in the fridge; once shelled they spoil.

8: Roasted Chickpeas: Packed with kaempferol and quercetion two inflammation fighters, chickpeas keep skin looking clear and even. Also as we age our metabolism slows down. Manganese and copper are two minerals that support metabolism at the cellular level.

9. Cucumbers: A cucumber a day keeps cellulite away. Not only are they delicious and packed skin plumping water but, when sliced and rubbed on cellulite prone areas they phytochemicals tighten collagen reducing the visibility of cellulite.

10. Guacamole: You can’t go wrong with avocados, which are great for your blood and bones. Oleic acid, the monounsaturated fat that is good for your heart makes up 59% of it’s total fat. It’s also great for skin and hair.

We remain committed to working together with our team members and guests to combat childhood hunger and hope to see even more success this year.”

Now through Oct. 2, nearly 1,600 Denny’s restaurants nationwide will join the fight to end childhood hunger with all proceeds going directly to No Kid Hungry. Through No Kid Hungry, every $1 donation received provides a child with 10 healthy meals, making even the smallest of donations impactful. To thank guests for their generous donations, Denny’s will provide a discount coupon redeemable at participating locations upon their next visit.

This year, Denny’s will also donate $1 to No Kid Hungry every time the hashtag #ShareMySlam is shared on Twitter and Instagram, giving guests another way to help this important cause. Guests may also contribute to the campaign with a monetary donation of their choice at dennysnokidhungry.com.

Having Fun On Chef vs. Challenge On The Cooking Channel!

Mt Hood Railroad 2015

What a fun night!  My Mother, sister Kathi and I joined guests on the Mount Hood Railroad for a special dining experience being filmed for The Cooking Channel.  The new series “Chef vs. Challenge” with Chef Chuck Hughes premiered last night (September 8th, 2015) and it was thrilling to see our adventure on T.V.!  Before boarding the train the chef was a surprise so that added to the fun of the evening.  Chuck Hughes is a chef from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  His previous shows include “Chuck’s Eat The Street” and “Chuck’s Day Off”, also on The Cooking Channel.  For the Chef vs. Challenge Chuck needed to cook for 125 people on a moving train in under 6 hours.  Did he do it?  Check your local listings and find out!  (And see me rave about the Rarebit :-> )

Now, about our starting point, Mt. Hood, Oregon.  About an hours drive from Portland, following the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, which separates the states of Oregon and Washington, you arrive in the Wind Surfing Capital of the World, Hood River.  This is one of my families favorite places to visit on a day trip.

Today there’s a lot of activity on this train.  Our friendly wait staff is making due with camera crews being added to the mix.  Train aisles are only so wide!  Everyone seems to be excited and ready for anything so a little bump and bobbing around is fine.  (I really don’t know how the wait staff and camera crew did it.  I can barely walk on the train while it’s still!)

Mt Hood Railroad kathi and cameraman

With each course we were greeted with all local ingredients hand-picked by our Chef.  The Hot Citrus Mussels were my favorite!  Along with the Mt. Hood Winery Pinot Gris this was a great pairing ~

Mt Hood Railroad Muscles and pinot gris

You can’t beat the view on this railroad!  With every mile you get closer and closer to our spectacular Mount Hood.

Mt Hood Railroad Moms Reflection
Can you see it Mom?

Between the delicious food courses and the ever changing scenery dining on the Mt. Hood Railroad is definitely an experience.

Mt Hood Railroad stream

And who’s been cooking for us this evening?

Mt Hood Railroad Kathi and Chuck Hughes

My lucky sister!  Chuck was very charming and visited each dining car to introduce himself and describe his local food choices, some make shift cooking supplies (grocery cart as ‘smoker’?  Yep, that happened) and the challenges of cooking on a moving train.  I can only imagine! The delicious food was the focus of the night but at the end of the rail line we see the true star:

Travel To The Napa Valley And Enjoy The Wine Train!

Napa Valley Wine Train - Year Round Fun! Ann Again and again Reviews
Photo courtesy of Napa Valley Wine Train

When Rob and I get a chance we hop a quick flight to visit our heaven on Earth – The Napa Valley. 10 years ago we discovered the glory of the Napa Valley and almost get giddy with each return.  It’s so-o-o beautiful and it’s lovely to take in the gorgeous surroundings, and history, while tasting delicious, well-crafted wines.  With this trip we were treated to a lovely 3-course dinner on the Napa Valley Wine Train, a staple of Napa Valley history and one of the Nation’s only active historical passenger railroads.

Napa Valley Wine Train pt 1

We began our 3 hour trip enjoying a glass of Grgigh Hills Chardonnay.  While waiting for appetizers of bread and cheese, fruit and compote, our waiter gave us the OK to head to the tasting car.  This turned out to be a good arrangement due to the fact that we had the Wine Educator all to ourselves!  The very accommodating staff brought our appetizers to us and we nibbled, listened and learned more about wine.  (While I was describing a wine as “sweet” the correct term is “fruit forward”.  Good to know ;-> )

Napa Valley Wine Train pt 2

Special Dining Experience On The Mount Hood Railroad

Mt Hood Railroad 2015

What a fun night!  My Mother, sister Kathi and I joined guests on the Mount Hood Railroad for a special dining experience being filmed for The Cooking Channel.  Our chef was a surprise so that added to the fun of the evening.  Mt. Hood is an hour drive from my town of Portland and it’s one of the most beautiful drives around.  Following the Columbia River Gorge, which separates the states of Oregon and Washington, you arrive in the Wind Surfing Capital of the World, Hood River.  This is one of my families favorite places to visit on a day trip.  And today’s visit was very special.  Can’t wait to see what happens!

There’s a lot of activity on the train.

With each course we were greeted with all local ingredients hand-picked by our Chef.  The Hot Citrus Mussels were my favorite!  Along with the Mt. Hood Winery Pinot Gris this was a great pairing ~

You can’t beat the view on this railroad!  With every mile you get closer and closer to our spectacular Mount Hood.

Between the delicious food courses and the ever changing scenery dining on the Mt. Hood Railroad is definitely an experience.

Experience The Glory Of The Napa Valley Aboard The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley Wine Train - Year Round Fun! Ann Again and again Reviews

When ever Rob and I get a chance we hop a quick flight and visit our heaven on Earth – The Napa Valley. 10 years ago we discovered the glory of the Napa Valley and almost get giddy with each return trip.  It’s just so-o-o beautiful and... it’s such fun tasting delicious, well-crafted wines.

While waiting for our appetizers of bread and cheese, fruit and compote, our waiter gave us the OK to head to the tasting car.  This turned out to be a good arrangement due to the fact that we had the Wine Educator all to ourselves!  The very accommodating staff brought our appetizers to us and we nibbled, listened and learned more about wine.  (What I was describing as “sweet” is actually “fruit forward”.  Good to know ;-> )

The Blog Forward Challenge - Ann Again and again Reviews

The Blog Forward Challenge - Ann Again and again Reviews We’re 5 months into the year 2014.  Did you make a resolution to get fit, or eat healthier this year?  I was tired of the tummy flab that was taking over my middle due to menopause (yep, I said it) and I was feeling pretty weak.  Enough of that I say!  I’m five months into my healthier lifestyle and feel confident I can keep this up.  Here are ways to stick to your healthier lifestyle resolution – and a giveaway! Ways that help me stick to my resolution:

  • Make a standing appointment to exercise.  Try to keep it the same time every day.
  • If you don’t feel like moving tell yourself ‘Let’s just do a couple of minutes’.  I’m sure your body will encourage your mind to stick around and do a few more reps. and you will find you’ve completed a full workout.
  • Remember to drink a full glass of water before eating.
  • You will always feel better about yourself after you exercise.  Remember that!

With regard to food choices I’m enjoying the taste and long lasting full feeling I get from eating Zone Perfect bars.  The taste selection is vast and my girls like them too.  We’ve finally tried Quinoa (keen-wha) that we’ve been hearing about but weren’t sure how to pronounce.  I really like grains so quinoa works out well for me as a smarter nutritional choice over rice.  And now that grill season is here my-oh-my!  My husband grilled Cauliflower and added dashes of seasoning salt, black pepper and the juice of one lemon to create a flavor I’ve never had from cauliflower.  Absolutely delicious and so much better in the nutrition and calorie category over mashed potatoes.  Check out this chart for side dish swap ideas: Ways To Stick To Your Healthier Life Style - And A Giveaway! Ann Again and again Reviews With my exercising routine, on one hand I’m bummed about the fact that weight is not coming off.  I’ve been exercising for 4 months now, 5 to 6 days a week – a mix of cardio and area specific movements – and have lost a whopping 5 lbs.   But on the other hand I am so much stronger than I was a month ago, let alone 4 months ago, and that feeling of strength is what I absolutely love about exercising.  If weight doesn’t come off, well that’s a drag and it frustrates me, but I won’t stop my workouts because feeling stronger brings me joy and strength and joy is what I want in my life.  (Oh and love, of course!  and a delightful Pinot Gris ;->)

Did You Know These Big Companies Are In Your Cupboards? - Ann Again and again Reviews

I’m not oblivious to the fact that companies like Nestle and Kraft have a wide net over the foods that are offered in grocery stores. But I was surprised to find the reach a particular company had with regard to butter – even though the brands are different, they are all owned by the same company. Money isn’t spread around, it looks to all be going into the same pockets. When standing in the grocery aisle it appears you have many choices, but do you really?

The Honest Kitchen - Healthy Dehydrated Pet Food - Ann Again and again Reviews - Smooches Dog Treats

While my family settles into the new year, we are not only recovering from a very busy season of celebrating the holidays and hosting 3 birthday parties (whew!) we are also helping our dear Chocolate Lab Benny recover from ingesting 4 pounds of chocolate.  Yes, 4 pounds!  One evening, while attending a gathering, we mistakenly left a 4 lbs. bag of M&M’s too low to the ground and Benny devoured it by the time we returned.  Benny spent Christmas day in the pet hospital and, with great care and attention, he is home and returning to his happy spirit.  What a scare!!!

His diet is gradually re-introducing the foods he should be eating, and he is responding very well.  We were offered the opportunity to try dog treats from The Honest Kitchen and Benny is enjoying his treats and his system is responding very well.  It’s nice to see his tail wagging again!

The Honest Kitchen – Smooches Dog Treats

As per the information that was sent along with our review sample, The Honest Kitchen uses a dehydrated process to naturally preserve the ingredients without the need for chemicals of any kind.  Dehydration is a gentle technique that removes only the moisture and retains most natural nutrients found in fresh, raw, whole food ingredients.  All ingredients are 100% human-grade, made in the USA and contain no corn, soy, rice, beet pulp or wheat. All meats are hormone and antibiotic free, fruits and vegetables are certified non-GMO, and grains are 100% organic.   Additionally, every box of food is made with love, in a human food facility in Illinois (not in a pet food plant) for the highest possible quality standards. Humans actually taste every ingredient that goes into these recipes as part of the product development process.

You can find  The Healthy Kitchen pet food products at Chewy.com

Our family looks forward to many, many more years with our sweet Benny (a.k.a. Banjo. a.k.a. Benjamin Thatcher Harrison).  We hope he’s learned his lesson that, although he’s  classified as a Chocolate Labrador, that doesn’t give him permission to actually ingest chocolate.   Enjoy The Honest Kitchen instead! :->

Food Should Taste Good Snack Chips Review - Ann Again and again Reviews

Food Should Taste Good Review - Ann Again and again Reviews

Is there any clearer message from a product name than “Food Should Taste Good”?  I don’t think so.  And hey, I completely agree with them!

I am a crunchy, salty food craving girl so when I was given the opportunity to try chips from the company Food Should Taste Good I was more than happy to check out their taste.  My first thought wasn’t so much about the flavor as much as it was the sensation of eating a true food.  These aren’t highly processed chips, Food Should Taste Good has created chips from real food, using quality oils, and the taste is fantastic!

When it comes to processed foods I am very weary about what I allow in our cupboards.  Yes, my girls ask for the big name chips and puffs that turn your fingers a bright orange, but those just aren’t for me.  I don’t feel good when I eat things like that.  And what’s available in our home, for the most part, dictates what my children eat.  (My oldest is 15 so when she goes to the store with her friends I can only hope she makes healthy choices.  Teenagers!)

Food Should Taste Good has created delicious flavors:  Olive, Lime, Sweet Potato, MultiGrain, Blue Corn and Cheddar.  The MultiGrain has a light taste, with a heartiness that was perfect with the salsa I picked up at the Farmer’s Market.  For an ever-so-slightly sweet taste the Sweet Potato chip tastes good paired with a fruit salsa or your favorite fruit jam.  The Olive, with pieces of olive in each chip, was absolutely delicious with sun-dried tomato hummus.  So good!

Food Should Taste Good Review Ann Again and again Reviews

All natural, Gluten Free, certified vegan, no trans fats with very low sodium Food Should Taste Good chips are absolutely delicious.  I’m hooked!  You can find these chips at New Seasons, Target, Walmart – I saw them at Costco the other day!  The bigger the bag of these chips the better!  For more information visit:  http://www.foodshouldtastegood.com/  .

Ann Again and again Reviews City Target Downtown Portland

Tuesday, July 23rd the much anticipated City Target store in Downtown Portland held a party to celebrate it’s completion. Located in the historical Galleria building on 10th and Morrison, City Target will serve the 90,000 people who work downtown and the 12,000 residents who call downtown their home. A wonderful benefit is that it will employ over 200 people.

The party was lively and loud and I can not believe how my pictures don’t show how many people were there! My lens was focused, for sure. (It was packed.) Delicious, tasty offerings from Voodoo Donut (Maple w/ a slice of Bacon Donuts, mmmmm) Kenny & Zuke’s Deli, Saint Cupcake to name a few. Lively libations from local wineries and breweries and a band – Fort Atlantic – representing The Doug Fir lounge.

As my mom and I walked through the two floors of City Target my mind was reeling with memories of what The Galleria used to look like. I worked on the second floor, at a lovely store called Pacific Arts, for four years. During the time I worked at this store I met a man named Rob Harrison, and my life changed. (We’ve now been married for 20 years.) Yes, this building holds many memories for me.

Bullseye was there having her picture taken, all the while adorned with a shiny pink, rhinestone encrusted, collar. It was a tremendous party to welcome Target to downtown Portland.

(Since I’m still getting used to my WordPress.org home I’m going to share the pics I have in this slideshow. And once I figure out how to add captions I definitely will. So much to learn!)
