Option #1: Topical Creams & Preventative Foods

“There are a variety of topical treatments, the ones with cocoa butter are the trend, but they won’t do much if anything to improve severe stretch marks. These creams and oils perform better when used as preventive measures because fully developed stretch marks are rarely skin-deep,” explains Dr. Brandow.

Gelatin powder has been suggested as a great way to get more collagen into your system. Coconut oil mixed with beeswax is said to prevent stretch marks, especially when applied throughout the day. Eating foods rich in vitamin C can help prevent stretch marks from the inside out. Adding things like red peppers, parsley, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts are good bets.


Option #2: Lasers

Many women who have post pregnancy stretch marks turn to lasers to eliminate this unwanted scarring. Kim Kardashian recently announced via her Snapchat that she would undergo laser treatments to rid her stretch marks. The Coolbeam laser, which is the one Kim Kardashian is going with, requires up to 5 treatments at around $5,000 per treatment which adds up to $25,000. Lasers are known for high level of safety and efficacy and most patients come away very pleased with the result. The treated area heals rather quickly, within a week to three weeks.

“Lasers are far less invasive than a tummy tuck, which has a much longer recovery time. Lasers do have some risk in that they can burn the skin or cause tissue damage. Therefore, it’s very important to choose a doctor who knows what they are doing,” advises Dr. Brandow.


Option #3: Platelet Rich Plasma with Micro-needling

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been around for the past two decades and used to help athletes like Tiger Woods and Alex Rodriquez recover from injury. A few years ago, the “Vampire Facial” made headlines when Micro-needling was added to the procedure offering a vibrant, smooth, flawless complexion. The results were so great that cosmetic surgeons started to explore other parts of the body such as stretch marks on the buttocks, breast, arms, thighs and abdomen.

This calls for blood to be taken from the patient then put into a machine that separates the platelet-rich plasma from the blood. It is then spread over the face after the micro-needling is completed. The micro-needling is a process where a pen-like tool with several tiny needles at the tip is carefully guided over the affected area making microscopic holes on both the outer and inner layers of skin. These holes are so small that they heal within a few hours. The process triggers a healing response in the dermis layer which is what causes the fast fading of stretch marks. Doctors recommend micro-needling with PRP over any other treatment because the results are significant and the cost is about $1000 per session. “Micro-needling with PRP is a combination that offers a fast, in office option, with excellent results and is less costly than lasers,” explains Dr. Brandow who was recently on TV speaking of the procedure.

Dr. Brandow adds that the advantage of micro-needling with PRP for stretch marks over lasers is a lesser chance of scarring and skin discoloration. “Skin on the body is more susceptible to hyperpigmentation than on the face making Micro-needling is a safer option for ethnicities with varying skin tones. This is a big advantage over cool beam lasers, IPL or chemical peels,” he explains.


Option #4: The Tummy Tuck

This is the gold standard offering the best results however it’s invasive and the recovery time is longer. Known as abdominoplasty, the procedure removes excess skin in the abdominal region and tightens the muscles. The stretch marks below the belly button are discarded along with the excess skin. “The tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that comes with risk so typically candidates must be non-smokers in good physical health as certain they will not want more kids after surgery. It’s is the only option for complete and permanent stretch mark removal. Recovery time can be up to 6 weeks and again it is critical that one chooses a reputable doctor. A botched tummy tuck can lead to off-centered belly buttons, long thick scars, and dangerous infections,” warns Dr. Brandow.

Ultimately stretch marks are an unfortunate reality that comes with pregnancy, puberty and any other weight or muscle gain where the skin is stretched. There are preventative measures one can take. Be very wary of anything that seems too good to be true and always consult with a credentialed doctor when considering any kind of cosmetic procedure.

1. Focus on the good.

“A daily exercise I often have my patients do is keep an appreciation or gratitude journal. When you focus on all the things to be happy for in your life then more great things come. Think generally and use your senses. What do you appreciate seeing, smelling, touching, tasting, listening to? Write it down. Within a few weeks you’ll train the mind to pivot to an appreciate thought when a negative thought comes,” explains Dr. Hafeez.


2. Make plans.

Making plans to see relatives, to see a new exhibit a movie or to travel gets our mind moving forward towards something positive that we can be hopeful and optimistic about. Dr. Hafeez suggests making plans to do 3 things per month for the next 3 months. “Choose things that you know will bring you joy and then go do them! Feeling excited about what is coming and talking about how fun it will be keeps us optimistic and forward-moving,” says Dr. Hafeez.


3. Control what you can, delegate the rest! 

We get pessimistic and worry about the worst possible outcomes when we realize that we cannot control every detail. This leads to anxiety and an even stronger feeling of having to control conditions, and even others. According to Dr. Hafeez, this is a trap. “Figure out what needs to get done. What actions you can take. Then let go of anything else that is beyond your control with faith that everything will turn out fine. Envision the desired outcome,” advises Dr. Hafeez.


4. Limit your news watching and avoid it before bed. 

“There is a very common pattern I see people falling into,” says Hafeez. “People awaken and immediately reach for their smartphone for news headlines. They then turn on the TV news as background noise. They listen to the news in their cars, have news alerts going off on their phones all day, catch the evening news and then the 11 pm news before bed. No wonder they’re less optimistic! What you choose to look at will impact your mood. Remember, good news doesn’t get ratings,” she adds.


5. Don’t snooze. Instead just breathe.

When the alarm goes off give yourself a few minutes to just lie there, eyes closed focused on your breathing. Breathe in counting to 4 and then breathe out. Do a mental scan of your entire body from head to toe thanking your cells for restoring you as you slept. “Deep breathing is a form of meditation and in the morning, you have a small window of opportunity to decide what kind of day you want it to be,” says Dr. Hafeez.


6. Distract yourself with something that requires focus.

The key here is to pick something you truly enjoy doing and do it daily. It can be painting, coloring, yoga, a 20-minute walk or jog, listening to music and dancing around your living room. “When you are fully engaged in something, you can’t ruminate which leads to pessimism,” explains Dr. Hafeez.


7. Make feeling good top priority.

When you commit to feeling good you instantly start to think more optimistically. According to Dr. Hafeez, when you’re mindful of your own negativity and shift to a better feeling positive thought you feel powerful. You’ll feel like you can conquer anything when you can master your own mindset.

Raw or roasted doesn’t matter, although if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, buy unsalted nuts. “Adding nuts to your diet can aid in decreasing levels of enzymes that lead to protein plaques from forming and dementia. Nuts can also reduce brain inflammation, keep blood pressure low, a key for preventing stroke,” explains Dr. Calapai.

The first systematic review of evidence that commercially-available, brain-training programs might help with healthy aging was just published in Neuropsychological Review 1/31/2017. The reviewers found that BrainHQ from Posit Science had by far the most and the highest quality studies.

The authors of this first systematic review conclude “current evidence supports that at least some commercially available computerized brain training products can assist in promoting healthy brain aging.”  The reviewers surveyed the brain training market and the academic literature to categorize the quantity and quality of peer-reviewed studies showing effects of brain training in healthy aging.

Reviewers looked at 18 commercially-available, brain-training programs, and found that 11 had no clinical trials or empirical evidence for review. The reviewers found seven companies had studies that were relevant and met the review criteria of being peer-reviewed clinical trials of computerized exercises with formal cognitive outcome measures for healthy adults aged 50 and older.

This methodology resulted in 26 studies for review. Of those 26 studies, 10 were trials of Posit Science exercises. Eight of those 10 studies were judged to be of the highest quality. Posit Science far outpaced its nearest competitor, which had three studies of which only one was considered high quality. The reviewers wrote: “Multiple peer-reviewed articles evaluating Posit Science programs have fulfilled the gold standard for clinical trials.” Of the seven companies that the reviewers found had any relevant evidence from trials, Lumosity was found to anchor the lower-end, with what the reviewers described as one randomized controlled trial of “moderate quality.”

Add To Unscented Lotion:  When you’re ready to moisturize place your lotion in your hand along with 2 to 3 drops of essential oil.  You have now turned your unscented lotion into any fragrance that suites your fancy that day!  Rosewood to soothe, Tangerine to Uplift or Clary Sage to Refresh.  (We’re all familiar with the classic scents of Lavender, Vanilla and Rose.  I’m highlighting unusual fragrances.) With over 33 individual scents to choose from imagine creating your own combos for your personal scent of the day!
  4. Put on a damp cloth to relief sinus/allergy pain:  The lovely blossoms of Spring and Summer can bring unpleasant allergy annoyances that might have you turning to medicine for relief.  A natural way to relieve sinus pain and pressure is by adding drops of Eucalyptus oil to a damp washcloth or a warmed flax seed heating pad and placing it over your eyes and nose.  Breathe deep.  Ahhhh, much better.
  5. Droplets on porous room decor:  If you have “decorative spheres” made of rattan or rope, or other porous bowl fillers placed around your rooms for a decorative touch add drops of essential oil to these items and let the fragrance waft through out your home.

I wanted to make sure, for at least one time in my adult life, I didn’t have the flabbiest booty in town!  Everyday I get stronger and that’s a great feeling!  Here are ways to help you stick to a healthier lifestyle:

  • Keep a healthy snack with you.  We’ve just returned from a family trip that required lots of time in the good ol’ family van.  Trying to time lunch and dinner can be very tricky when you have lots of items on your “Must See List”.  Don’t get to the point of ‘I’m crazy hungry!’ and eat something from a drive-thru.  Keep a Zone Perfect bar with you and that way you’ll have something tasty and healthy to eat.
  • Share your meal.  I’m sure you’re familiar with the act of dividing a meal in half, eating a portion at a restaurant and taking the rest home.  However, more often than not, my dividing line would start sliding over and I’d tell myself ‘Just one more bite.  Just one more’  only to be so uncomfortable at the end of the night with how much I’d eaten.  Or, are you really going to eat what you take home?  Really? Here’s a switch my husband and I have been making, we share our meal.  We order a salad and an entree and share both.  It’s better for our waistline AND our debit card.
  • Exercise for just 10 minutes.  Okay, here’s the thing.  If you feel you have no energy, or don’t have the time to exercise, say to yourself “I’m just going to do this for 10 minutes”.  I’ll bet that 10 minutes will turn into 20 which is a great time frame for movement that will elevate your heart-rate, increase metabolism and get your muscles strengthened.  Your mood will be elevated too!  Win-win

Every summer, millions of people will make their way to the beach. There is no denying the fact that the beach is one of the country’s favorite vacation destinations. However, it is important to take the necessary precautions while enjoying the warm water and abundance of sunshine. Here are some tips for staying healthy at the beach.

Drink plenty of water.
Some people tend to forget the importance of staying properly hydrated. The hot environment of the beach can cause a person to expel a substantial amount of moisture. In order to prevent dehydration, the body needs to have a steady supply of fresh water. If a person’s urine exhibits a darkened appearance, this is a tell-tale sign that they are experiencing mild dehydration.

Wear sunscreen.
Before heading out for the day, be sure to apply an adequate amount of sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief, individuals with darker skin tones still need to use sunscreen. An SPF of at least 15 will be suitable for most people. However, the people who have very fair skin may need to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30.

Wear comfortable clothing.
Most beach-goers tend to do a lot of walking. This means that it is a good idea to wear comfortable clothing at all times. Both adults and children need to select beachwear that does not restrict their movement.

Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying a cold alcoholic beverage. However, avoid consuming entirely too much alcohol, especially in extreme hot weather.  Not only does being intoxicated impact a person’s judgment, but it could also lead to becoming ill.

The Blog Forward Challenge - Ann Again and again Reviews We’re 5 months into the year 2014.  Did you make a resolution to get fit, or eat healthier this year?  I was tired of the tummy flab that was taking over my middle due to menopause (yep, I said it) and I was feeling pretty weak.  Enough of that I say!  I’m five months into my healthier lifestyle and feel confident I can keep this up.  Here are ways to stick to your healthier lifestyle resolution – and a giveaway! Ways that help me stick to my resolution:

  • Make a standing appointment to exercise.  Try to keep it the same time every day.
  • If you don’t feel like moving tell yourself ‘Let’s just do a couple of minutes’.  I’m sure your body will encourage your mind to stick around and do a few more reps. and you will find you’ve completed a full workout.
  • Remember to drink a full glass of water before eating.
  • You will always feel better about yourself after you exercise.  Remember that!

The Blog Forward Challenge - Ann Again and again Reviews

Now that I’ve finally become used to writing the year 2014 (instead of 2013)  I’m ready to accept that it’s a new day and with that I am setting goals for myself to accomplish in this new year.  I’m participating in The Blog Forward Challenge and this is just the encouragement I need to start off on the right foot.  My first set of goals are as follows:

  1. Be more active to help my body slow down this “lovely” effect of peri-menopause midsection weight gain.  When I’m physically active I’m also a lot happier in my day, so it’s a great natural mood elevator.
  2. Paint the living room.  I have been wanting our little living room painted for years and I feel this is the year to get it done.
  3. Learn how to play a song on the piano that is in our little living room that will be newly painted.


I’m exciting about choosing a color for our living room and our girls are old enough to grab some paint brushes and help.  With regard to the piano I’ve picked out a dvd that’s going to help guide my fingers to the correct keys.  And along with my exercise I’m getting some tasty help from sponsors of The Blog Forward Challenge – ZonePerfect bars.  These bars should help me feel fuller longer and also take care of my occasional desire for something sweet.

Five Steps For Sticking To Your New Year's Resolutions

It’s that time of year when people all over the world send Christmas and New Year cards, celebrate the holidays with family, and stuff themselves silly with yummy foods and desserts. But it’s also a time to reflect back on the past 12 months and all that’s happened. Some of these people will decide it’s time for a change, and use the New Year as motivation for creating new habits – in other words, they make New Year’s resolutions. But we all know that the success rate of change can be low. Maybe you’ve tried in the past to keep a resolution and it just never stuck, but you weren’t sure why. Try following these five steps for achieving your New Year’s resolution or any goal.


  • Be specific. If you aren’t specific with your goal, how will you know when you’ve reached it? For example, say you want to lose weight. That’s a great goal – but how much weight? If you lose a half pound, technically you’ve lost weight. But if you really want to lose 25 pounds, well, that takes a lot more effort!
  • Plan your steps. Now that you know exactly what you want to achieve, you need to make plans on how you’ll go about doing it. It’s not enough to say you’ll eat healthy. What does “eating healthy” mean? What about exercising? To say you’ll “exercise more” doesn’t give you a very strong roadmap to success. However, saying you will exercise three days a week for 30 minutes a day is more specific and helps you formulate a plan for attacking your goal with fervor. It gives you direction and helps you stay on track.
  • Make small changes. It’s much more difficult to go from not exercising at all to exercising six days a week – so start with small, manageable changes. For example, try making your initial goal to exercise twice a week for 30 minutes each. If that’s too much, that’s okay. Do less time. The point is to set a goal you know you can achieve. Then, once you’ve conquered that goal consistently for several weeks, you can add on to that goal. If your initial goal is too difficult, it’s likely you will become overwhelmed and give up altogether.
  • Stay accountable to someone. If you have a friend with similar goals, work on them together. Commit to calling each other once a week (or daily, if necessary) to check in on your progress. Choose someone you know will not have a problem calling you out if you don’t meet your goals that week. Knowing someone else is going to check in with you can be motivation in itself for not cheating. You can also state your goals publicly on a blog or social media. Telling others makes your goals – and your commitment to them – more real.
  • Keep a visual reminder nearby. Many of us are at desks all day long, or at least for some part of the day. Why not get creative and place glass prints with photos and/or inspirational sayings on your desk? If you’re not at a desk, put up a reminder wherever you frequently find yourself. Having the tangible reminder in front of you all day long will cement your goal in your mind and strengthen your determination to achieve it.


When you remember and put into practice these five steps, it’s much easier to achieve your New Year’s resolution and stick with it for longer than a few months. So get ready, get set, and go onward toward your goal! You can do it!
